Switch to summer-blend products
Auto club AAA said the drop below $3 ended the longest stretch of above $3 prices in the state, and comes about a week after the national average dropped below $3.
The lower prices are expected to continue through the holidays, but most likely will climb after winter when driving increases and refineries do maintenance and switch to summer-blend products.
But for now, enjoy saving money at the pump.
"Abundant oil supplies, winter-blend fuels and low demand continue to place downward pressure on gas prices," said AAA spokesman Nick Jarmusz in a news release on Friday.
"Crude oil prices seem to be leveling out, which may slow the rate of future drops in gasoline prices, but we haven't hit the bottom yet," Jarmusz said.
In Madison, the average price is $2.998 a gallon. MadisonGasPrices.com said the low price in town is $2.97 and the most common high price is $3.03.
Of the six metro areas in Wisconsin monitored by AAA, Milwaukee has the lowest average at $2.924 while Eau Claire has the highest at $3.084.
